    MOTIMOVE

    MOTIvation to MOVE stimulator generates contractions of paralyzed innervated muscles in a manner that provides the desired function. Motimove 8 is an eight-channel battery-powered stimulator for paralyzed muscles with sensor control and many extras. Motimove 4 is a four-channel stimulator for paralyzed muscles with sensor control (light version). MOTIMOVE is a multi-channel electronic stimulator which communicates via Bluetooth with a remote computer (graphical command display) for the selection of the application, fast one-time calibration, and setup of stimulation parameters. MOTIMOVE takes advantage of many sensors’ inputs for personalized sensor-driven control. After setup, MOTIMOVE can operate independently without the remote computer.

    The envisioned applications of the MOTIMOVE are:

    • The assistance of the volitional exercise of cyclic and goal-oriented functional movements;
    • Generation of missing movement that is the prerequisite for cyclic or goal-oriented functional movements;
    • exercise aiming to increase muscle strength and bulk;
    • an exercise that can decrease the level of spasticity;
    • an exercise that can increase the range of motion;
    • an exercise that prevents complications of no-use pattern;
    • an exercise that prevents pressure sores;
    • exercise increasing the local and overall blood circulation;
    • an exercise required to allow the standing (loading of the skeleton and bodily liquids by gravity)

    MOTIMOVE APPLICATIONS

    FES cycling

    Lower extremity and abdominal muscles are activated in a sequence. The sequence is controlled by signals coming from the sensor measuring the angle of the crank arm. Every channel can be combined with AFU to postpone muscle fatigue. Applicable for hemiplegics, paraplegics, tetraplegics and fitness.

    FES rowing

    The user controls the activation of flexor and extensor muscles by pressing the switch on the handle. Every channel can be combined with AFU to postpone muscle fatigue. Applicable for hemiplegics, paraplegics and fitness.

    FES walking

    Real-time control based on the signals from the wired insoles (sold separately). Each insole comprises five high-quality industrial pressure sensors and a gyroscope measuring foot rate of rotation in sagittal plane. The sensors are hysteresis-free with no measurable time delay. The system allows precise detection of gait cycle events and pressure distribution over the sole. Values from 6 sensors and states of stimulation can be acquired to a remote computer with 100Hz via Bluetooth. Insoles are resizable.Applicable for hemiplegics or paraplegics with robotic aid.

    FES grasping

    Three-phase control of extensor and flexor muscle groups. Can be used for control of grasp (finger, wrist and thumb muscle) and prehension (shoulder and elbow muscles). Applicable for hemiplegics and tetraplegics.

    FES exercise

    Mild to strong stimulation for increasing the muscle bulk while in bed or a wheelchair. Applicable for ICU, prevention of pressure ulcers and fitness.

    ANTI-FATIGUE UNIT (AFU)

    AFU is power supplied from the stimulator battery via audio cable, but it can also be supplied externally with coin batteries. It can be used with any other stimulator if the following limits are met:

    • pulse amplitude: 0-170mA,
    • pulse width (PW): 50-1000us,
    • frequency (F): 1-500Hz,
    • where PW * F ≤ 0.025.

    AFU mimics the natural activation of a muscle to reduce FES-induced muscle fatigue. The asynchronous stimulation of different branches of a nerve innervating the same muscle or synergistic muscles via several electrodes at a lower frequency (≈10-15Hz) results with the fused contraction with the comparable force to the one generated with single large electrode activated at higher frequency (≈40–50 Hz); yet, postpones the muscle fatigue for several times. This phenomenon was confirmed in several clinical studies (see publications).

    RESEARCH MODE

    Control is implemented via the RS485 communication protocol (Baud rate 115200). In this case, MOTIMOVE acts as a slave device with Bluetooth disabled.

    The stimulator will respond to a set of commands sent in 40 bytes, as shown below:

    • 5 bytes 0xFF,0x00,0x25,0x00,0x00 (message start - 1 byte, message length - 2 bytes, 2 dummy bytes- 0x0A0B is for no delay between pulses on adjacent channels). All values after first 5 bytes are to be sent in a lower nibble
    • 3 bytes for the period in ms (defined by the master controller). Pulses on consecutive channels are delayed for T/8, where T is the period of stimulation.
    • 4 bytes for power modulation (max value 10 = 100%)
    • 4 bytes for pulse width (max value 1000µs)
    • 8 x 2 bytes - stimulation value per channel (max value 170mA)
    • 2 bytes for demultiplexer channel selection (0x0F,0x0F if demultiplexer is not used)
    • 4 bytes not used
    • 1 byte for turning on high voltage (0x01 - on, 0x00 - off, 0x02 – do not change)
    • 1 byte for checksum
  • ARDUINO MODULE

    ARDUINO MODULE

    The module has 32-pin interface for external control with:

    • digital inputs for pulse duration (50-1000us),
    • SPI for pulse intensity 0-170mA in steps of 1mA,
    • Digital inputs for control of SSD relays for instantaneous, complete discharge of outputs, and
